Koeksisters

Recipe by: WorldlyRecipes.com

General: Thanks for this great traditional South African recipe guys! It is truly a sweet treat.

Ingredients:

8 oz plain flour, sieved

2 level tsp of baking powder

pinch of salt

1 oz margarine

1 egg, well beaten

4 – 5 tbsp milk

Oil for deep frying

For the syrup:

1 lb granulated sugar

½ pt water

1 stick of cinnamon

Method:

Rub the margarine into the sieved flour and salt. Add the baking powder, egg and enough mil to form rolling dough.

Roll out into a 12 “rectangle ¼ “thick and from this cut strips 3 “x 1 “. Cut each strip into 3 lengthways, not completely cutting though to the end and plait. Pinch at the end to secure.

Heat the oil in a large pan until hot, and cook the dough plaits until golden.

Make the syrup, by placing the sugar, water and cinnamon in a pan until the sugar has dissolved.

Dip each koeksister in the syrup mixture and serve.
